REVIEWS - Taxonomy ::
Action
A game with a beginning and an end, separated into definite smaller sections or levels, and one (or a small set of) characters whose story you follow and whose actions you control by direct input (e.g. pressing "A" makes Mario jump).
EX: Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, Pikmin
Adventure
An Action game without levels.
EX: Metroid, Legend of Zelda, Harvest Moon
Strategy
An Action game with a menu-based action system.
EX: Ogre Battle, Final Fantasy Tactics, Advance Wars
RPG
An Action game with a menu-based action system and without levels.
EX: Pokémon, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior
Simulation
An RPG, an Action game, an Adventure game, or (rarely) a Strategy game with no definite ending and persistent worlds.
EX: Animal Crossing, Doshin the Giant, the Sims
Fighting
A game of head-to-head fighting with a free action system.
EX: Tekken, Super Smash Bros., Street Fighter
Minigames
A game in which you and often other players play through a large selection of short, simple minigames.
EX: Wario Ware, Mario Party, Game & Watch Gallery
Music
A game in which you play to or create your own music. Somewhat of a new genre outside of Japan.
EX: Donkey Konga, Dance Dance Revolution, Daigassou! Band Bros.
Puzzle
A game of solving repetitive puzzles with relatively simple mechanics.
EX: Tetris, Meteos, Bubble Bobble
Racing
A game centered around racing.
EX: Mario Kart, Gran Turismo, F-Zero
Sports
A game based on playing sports.
EX: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Mario Tennis, Madden NFL
